4.2. Verificações de pré-instalação

  • Verify that all kit components match the parts removed from the vehicle.
  • Inspect new components for any shipping damage.
  • Ensure the vehicle is cool before starting work.

4.3. Procedimento de instalação

  1. Preparar o veículo: Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and chock the front wheels. Loosen the rear lug nuts, then raise the rear of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove Old Drum: If the drum is stuck, use a rubber mallet to tap around the drum face. If equipped, remove any retaining clips or screws.
  3. Remove Old Brake Components: Carefully remove the brake return springs, hold-down springs, brake shoes, and star wheel adjuster. Note the orientation of all components for reassembly. Disconnect the old wheel cylinder and brake hose.
  4. Install New Wheel Cylinder and Brake Hose: Install the new wheel cylinder (Part# W131480) and brake hose (Part# 2204095/2204096). Ensure all connections are secure and properly torqued.
  5. Assemble New Brake Shoes: Install the new brake shoes (Part# 871) and the brake spring mounting kit (Part# 17432K). Ensure all springs are correctly positioned and tensioned. Install the new star wheel adjusters (Part# 2812K/2813K).
  6. Install New Brake Drum: Clean the inside surface of the new brake drum (Part# DB794115) with brake cleaner. Carefully slide the new drum over the brake shoes. If the drum does not fit, the star wheel adjuster may need to be backed off slightly.
  7. Adjust Brake Shoes: Adjust the star wheel adjuster through the access hole in the backing plate until the drum has a slight drag when rotated by hand.
  8. Bleed Brake System: Using the provided one-man brake bleeder tool kit (Part# W80626), bleed the brake system to remove any air introduced during the hose and wheel cylinder replacement. Follow standard brake bleeding procedures, starting with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder.
  9. Reinstalar as rodas: Reinstall the wheels, hand-tighten the lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and then torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications.

5. Considerações operacionais

5.1. Brake System Break-In

After installing new brake drums and shoes, a proper break-in procedure is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. This process helps to seat the brake shoes to the drum surface and burn off any manufacturing residues.

  • Dirija o veículo a uma velocidade moderada (por exemplo, 30-40 mph).
  • Apply the brakes moderately (not hard) to slow down to about 10 mph. Do not come to a complete stop.
  • Repeat this process approximately 10-15 times, allowing a few minutes between each cycle for the brakes to cool.
  • Avoid heavy braking or prolonged stops immediately after installation.
  • After the break-in period, allow the brakes to cool completely before normal driving.

6. Manutenção

Regular inspection and maintenance of your brake system are essential for safety and performance.

6.1. Regular Inspections

  • Inspect brake shoes for wear at least every 12,000 miles or annually. Replace if friction material is less than 2mm thick.
  • Check brake drums for excessive wear, scoring, or cracks. Drums should be replaced if they exceed the maximum diameter stamped on the drum or show significant damage.
  • Inspect wheel cylinders for leaks. Replace if any leakage is observed.
  • Check brake hoses for cracks, bulges, or leaks. Replace if any damage is found.
  • Ensure the parking brake operates correctly and adjusts properly.

6.2. Limpeza

Periodically clean brake dust from the drum assembly using an approved brake cleaner. Avoid inhaling brake dust, as it may contain harmful particles.
